Battery help
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:54:47 AM »
Hey guys. Had something weird happen to me yesterday. I was running a freshly balanced charged 3s and after about 1 to 2 minutes it went into lipo cut off. I un plug and plug in again and it's good to go. The battery sat for a few months with a storage charge in it. Anyone run into this before?

Check the volts on the cells, most likely 1 or more might be below 3.7v, happened to one of mine :(

Thanks Dave. They balanced fine at 4.2 4.2 and 4.19 but I haven't checked since running it. Time to go find my meter.

K I checked. 4.1 4.0 and 4.0. Maybe it's an ESC problem. It's a VXL3s.

If your runnin a 3 cell could it be the cutoff for overheating? Does the vxl have a thermal protection cutoff?
It's all gone. :(

Maybe Travis but I was only running it for like a minute before it happened. Gonna try another battery today.

Ok this is weird. Tried another identical venom 4000mah 3s pack that I balanced charged today after it sat with a storage charge just like the first pack. It ran fine. No problems at all. So I put the first pack back in after confirming the volts. It ran for 45 seconds then the ESC went into low voltage cut off. Unplug and plug in again, it goes for just over 2 minutes then cuts out again. I keep doing this. Every time it cuts out I unplug and then go again. Every time it lasts a little longer than the time before. Like I said, weird. I checked the voltages through out and they stayed even on the way down. The pack is in good shape, no puffing, bad wires or connectors. Next is to charge it again and try it in another vehicle tomorrow.
Stumped.

Ive had similar issues with lipo's. They would trigger a low voltage shutdown on my esc. Even at 4.05 per cell.  Then when It was  run to 3.85 per cell I tried to recharge only to have my charger say Charge complete (at 3.85 each) I got so frusterated I tried everything. So as a last ditch effort I figured I would re solder my plugs. Really didn't think it was going to matter at all... but it did. Now the problem batter charges and discharges as it should. If all else re solder your plug, even if it doesn't apear faulty.
It's all gone. :(

I had the same problem running boats last winter. I thought it was settings in my esc...I tried every setting....same thing. Batts fully charged with balanced cells. They were venom 4000mah 3S and some cheaper 30C Turnigy packs. I had one set of batts that worked....that was it. Well, when the summer came around all my problems went away. It seems that the cheap Turnigy batts and the Venom batts were just that...cheap! They were affected by the cold and couldn't handle the amp draw....they were perfectly fine in the summer....yours will be too!
