The best Battery Connectors? (Lipo)
« on: May 07, 2012, 07:28:50 PM »
I'm sure this is a rookie question, but what is the best connector to use on Lipo batteries? I've used Traxxas connectors forever but am having issues with them stop working; the metal doesn't touch metal, but if I squeeze them power comes back.

Running a boat, a loss of power is a big deal. LOL

Deans connectors work pretty good for most applications. I run them in all my land vehicles without a problem. Genuine deans though, not the chinese knockoffs.

However, they can be a bit of a pain if you overheat them while soldering, attaching large guage wire isn't the easiest thing to do, and high powered boats can draw enough current to melt them.  :o

I'm running Castle 6.5mm bullet connectors in my boat.
Your damned straight I want the extra insurance.. you've got a ford festiva thats about to see more air time then a skateboard at the X-games.

I like the Traxxas connector.  The only one I prefer are the old Lightspeed (Anderson Power Pole) ones.  Never did care for Deans.

I switched to deans for land use because not only do they work well, but everyone has them. It has saved my back side on more than a couple ocasions to be able to simply grab a spare batt of someone else to finish a trail ride. I would assume the same would be true for boats, if you run a common connector you can either get help or help someone out with batts
If it ain`t broke.... Try harder.....

I use deans because it's what I've always used, but I wouldn't really say there is a "best" when it comes to any of the high quality connectors out there. They all handle enough current for most of our projects. Anyone using stupid amps (boats) will hopefully know better and uses bullet plugs. Ironically, the EC series of connectors from E-flite use bullet connectors and they are by far my least favorite design. The bullets are fine, but whoever came up with that stupid cheap blue plastic sheath obviously never undid one a half dozen times, at which point the bullets will only stay in place if caked in epoxy or CA. Stupid design. See Traxxas for getting the assemble-after-soldering design right.

I use both Deans connectors for charging and castle 5.5mm bullets on my cars for battery connection. I have considered using 6.5 but only for motor connectors in my 1/8
